Delaware is a small market for both fuels, and one where propane matters more than in most of the Mid-Atlantic. The Census Bureau counts 42,927 Delaware homes heated with propane, 10.4 % of occupied homes, against 27,950 on fuel oil or kerosene; electricity heats 161,082 and utility gas 170,158. In the EIA's survey of October 19, 2026, Delaware heating oil averaged $6.431 a gallon, 1st of 21 states, and propane $3.755, 9th of 38. The winter is mild by the standard of the oil states: 3,788 heating degree days from November to March. On that weather the EIA's average home would burn about 351 gallons of oil or 684 gallons of propane, which is $2,259 or $2,570 at this week's averages, before tax.
Propane first
A Delaware propane household paid $3.605 a gallon on average last winter, between a low week of $3.353 and a high of $3.744. This week's $3.755 is $0.044 cheaper than Maryland's average and $0.320 cheaper than New Jersey's. The EIA does not publish a wholesale propane price for Delaware, but the neighboring New Jersey figure, $1.260, gives an idea of how much of the retail price is added after the terminal.
A 500-gallon tank filled from 30 % to 80 % takes 250 gallons, or $939 at this week's Delaware average. A 1,000-gallon tank filled from the same reading takes 500 gallons, $1,878. The propane tank calculator reads any gauge and applies the 80 % fill level.

Heating oil in Delaware
The wholesale heating oil price the EIA reports for Delaware this week is $5.368, which leaves a dealer spread of $1.063 a gallon. Last winter Delaware oil averaged $4.521 from November to March, with its dearest week at $5.913 on March 23, 2026. The highest Delaware week since 2013 is $6.431.
A short heating season
Delaware's normal January counts 971 heating degree days, its November 515 and its March 656. That is 35 % fewer than a Maine January, so the same tank lasts longer here and a household on will-call delivery orders less often. The days-left calculator uses those monthly normals to say when the next order falls due, and the winter budget spreads the season's cost month by month. Many Delaware homes heat with electricity; for a household weighing a switch, the comparison page puts oil, propane and electric heat on the same per-million-Btu basis. The federal LIHEAP ceiling for a family of four in Delaware is $77,654 a year.
