Arkansas heats mainly with electricity and utility gas, but propane is the main heating fuel of 73,185 homes by the Census Bureau's 2024 count, 5.9 % of the total, and wood of another 28,513. In the EIA's weekly survey of October 19, 2026, Arkansas propane averaged $2.596 a gallon, 19 % more than in the same week a year before, 22nd of 38 states counting from the dearest and $0.093 below the national average. Last winter the state averaged $2.369 from November to March. A normal Arkansas winter counts 2,994 heating degree days over those months, so the EIA's average propane home in the South would burn about 541 gallons for heat, $1,404 at this week's price. The EIA does not survey heating oil in Arkansas. Prices exclude taxes and delivery fees.

The Arkansas price

The EIA does not publish a wholesale propane price for Arkansas. The Gulf Coast region's wholesale figure, $1.162, gives an idea of how much of the $2.596 residential average is added after the terminal for delivery, storage, the tank and the dealer. Last winter the Arkansas average ran from $2.189 to $2.514, its dearest week on February 9, 2026. The record week on file is $2.877, on March 14, 2022.

Arkansas and its neighbors

This week Arkansas propane is $0.415 dearer than Missouri's average, $0.244 dearer than Oklahoma's, $0.541 cheaper than Texas's, $0.623 cheaper than Tennessee's and $0.541 cheaper than Mississippi's. A 500-gallon tank filled from 30 % to 80 % costs $649 at the Arkansas average; the propane tank calculator reads any gauge.

Propane, wood and the winter

NOAA's population-weighted normals give Arkansas 743 heating degree days in December, 802 in January and 608 in February. A home that burns wood alongside propane uses fewer gallons than the EIA average, and a home that also heats water or cooks with propane uses more over the year. Either way, the gallons on last winter's delivery tickets are the better starting point, and the winter budget accepts them. Per million Btu at the ENERGY STAR furnace rating, Arkansas propane heat costs $32 this week; the comparison page sets it against electricity. The federal LIHEAP ceiling for four people in Arkansas is $56,776 a year, and the LIHEAP page gives the other sizes.
