The gallons a Montana winter takes

Montana's normal January counts 1,276 heating degree days, its December 1,301 and its February 1,067; October and April add 637 and 653. By the same scaling as the season estimate, the average propane home burns about 404 gallons over December and January. A 500-gallon tank filled to 80 % holds 400 gallons, so a household on will-call delivery should watch the gauge closely through midwinter. The days-left calculator turns a reading into a date.

The Montana price

The EIA does not publish a wholesale propane price for Montana. The Rocky Mountain region's wholesale figure, $1.187, shows roughly how much of the $2.168 residential average is added after the terminal. Last winter the Montana average ran from $1.840 to $2.199; the cheapest winter on file is 2015-16, at $1.568, and the record week $2.514, on March 14, 2022.

This week Montana propane is $0.517 dearer than North Dakota's average, $0.298 dearer than South Dakota's, $0.418 cheaper than Idaho's and $0.172 cheaper than the Rocky Mountain regional average. A 1,000-gallon tank filled from 20 % to 80 % takes 600 gallons, $1,301 at the Montana average; the propane tank calculator handles any size.

Locks, budget and help

Since 2014-15, the Montana winter average finished above the mid-October price in 12 of 12 seasons, with a median change of 11.8 %. With 872 gallons in a season, each ten cents a gallon is worth $87. The lock-in check replays every winter against a pre-buy price, and the winter budget spreads the cost month by month and accepts your own gallons, useful in a home that also burns wood. Per million Btu at the ENERGY STAR furnace rating, Montana propane heat costs $26 this week. The federal LIHEAP ceiling for four people in Montana is $69,463 a year; the LIHEAP page gives every household size.
