Idaho heats with gas and electricity first, but the Census Bureau's 2024 survey counts 38,761 homes heated mainly with propane, 5.2 % of occupied homes, and 39,471 with wood, one of the larger wood shares among the surveyed states. In the EIA's weekly survey of October 19, 2026, Idaho propane averaged $2.586 a gallon, 13 % more than in the same week a year before, 23rd of 38 states counting from the dearest and $0.103 below the national average. A normal Idaho winter counts 5,045 heating degree days from November to March. The EIA publishes no propane outlook for the West, so this site scales its national average home to Idaho's weather: about 791 gallons for the winter, $2,045 at this week's price. Last winter Idaho propane averaged $2.371. Heating oil is not surveyed in Idaho. Prices exclude taxes and delivery fees.
The Idaho price
Idaho has no wholesale propane series of its own in the EIA release. For the Rocky Mountain district as a whole the wholesale figure is $1.187, well under the $2.586 that Idaho homes pay; the difference pays for trucks, storage, tanks and the dealer. Last winter the Idaho average ran from $2.293 to $2.427, its dearest week on February 2, 2026. The dearest winter on file is 2021-22, at $2.713, and the record week $2.984, on March 13, 2017.

Idaho and its neighbors
This week Idaho propane is $0.418 dearer than Montana's average, $0.257 dearer than Utah's and $0.246 dearer than the Rocky Mountain regional average; Washington, Oregon, Nevada and Wyoming are not in the propane survey. A 500-gallon tank filled from 25 % to 80 % takes 275 gallons, $711 at the Idaho average, and a 1,000-gallon tank from 20 % takes 600 gallons, $1,552. The propane tank calculator handles other sizes and adds a delivery fee if there is one.
Propane and wood through an Idaho winter
NOAA's population-weighted normals give Idaho 1,207 heating degree days in December, 1,194 in January and 967 in February, and October and April add 528 and 546. A home that burns wood alongside propane uses fewer gallons than the national average home; one in a colder county than the state average uses more. Either way, last winter's delivery tickets are a better starting point, and the winter budget accepts them. The days-left calculator works for propane and turns a gauge reading into a date.
Price locks and heating help
Looking back to 2014-15, the Idaho winter average beat the mid-October price, upward, in 12 of 12 seasons; the lock-in check replays each of them against a dealer's fixed price. Per million Btu at the ENERGY STAR furnace rating, Idaho propane heat costs $31 this week; the comparison page sets it against electricity. The federal LIHEAP ceiling for four people in Idaho is $65,443 a year; the LIHEAP page gives the other household sizes.
