Two Colorado homes in three heat with utility gas, by the Census Bureau's 2024 count, and 111,675 with propane, 4.5 % of occupied homes. Those households face a long winter: NOAA's normals give Colorado 5,142 heating degree days from November to March, weighted by population, and 6,947 over the year. In the EIA's weekly survey of October 19, 2026, Colorado propane averaged $2.362 a gallon, 26th of 38 states counting from the dearest and $0.327 below the national average. The EIA publishes no propane outlook for the West, so this site scales its national average home to Colorado's weather: about 806 gallons for the winter, $1,903 at this week's price. Last winter the state averaged $2.245. Heating oil is not surveyed in Colorado. Prices exclude taxes and delivery fees.

From the terminal to the tank

The EIA's wholesale propane price for Colorado this week is $1.187. The residential average is $1.175 above it, so about 50 % of a Colorado propane bill goes to delivery, storage, the tank and the dealer. The price at the house follows the wholesale market only in part, and slowly.

Seasons in Colorado

Last winter the Colorado average ran from $2.078 to $2.304, its dearest week on March 23, 2026. The record week on file is $2.811, on March 21, 2022. Since 2014-15, the winter average finished above the mid-October price in 12 of 12 seasons, with a median change of 7.2 %. The lock-in check replays each of them against a dealer's fixed price.

Colorado and its neighbors

This week Colorado propane is $0.033 dearer than Utah's average, $0.288 dearer than Kansas's and $0.579 dearer than Nebraska's, and $0.022 dearer than the Rocky Mountain regional average. A 500-gallon tank filled from 30 % to 80 % costs $591 at the Colorado average; a 1,000-gallon tank from 20 % takes 600 gallons, $1,417. The propane tank calculator handles any size.

Altitude, cold and the gallons

Colorado's normal January counts 1,195 heating degree days, and October and April still bring 541 and 610, so the heating season runs well beyond the five months of the EIA's winter. Because the state figure is weighted by population, a house in a colder county than the average, high in the mountains for instance, will burn more. The days-left calculator works for propane, and the winter budget takes the gallons you actually bought. Per million Btu at the ENERGY STAR furnace rating, Colorado propane heat costs $29 this week; the comparison page sets it against electricity. The federal LIHEAP ceiling for four people in Colorado is $87,106 a year.
