No state in the federal heating fuel survey has a colder winter than North Dakota: NOAA's normals give it 6,990 heating degree days from November to March and 9,103 over a full year. The Census Bureau counts 47,594 North Dakota homes heated mainly with propane, 13.6 % of occupied homes, one of the highest shares in the survey. In the EIA's weekly survey of October 19, 2026, North Dakota propane averaged $1.651 a gallon, 38th of 38 states counting from the dearest, $1.038 below the national average. The long winter weighs on the bill more than the price does: the EIA's average Midwest propane home, scaled to North Dakota's weather, would burn about 933 gallons over the season, which is $1,541 at this week's average. Heating oil is not surveyed here. Prices exclude taxes.
The gallons a North Dakota winter takes
North Dakota's normal January counts 1,704 heating degree days, its December 1,583 and its February 1,399. October and April add 664 and 679, so the season runs well beyond the five months the EIA uses. By the same scaling as the season estimate, the average propane home burns about 228 gallons in January alone. A 500-gallon tank filled to 80 % holds 400 gallons, less than the average home would burn in December and January together, so a household on will-call delivery has to watch the gauge closely through midwinter.
