In Indiana, propane comes well behind gas and electricity as a heating fuel, but it still heats a large number of homes: the Census Bureau's 2024 survey counts 182,600 of them, 6.6 % of occupied homes, against 10,796 on fuel oil or kerosene. The EIA's weekly survey of October 19, 2026 gives $2.559 a gallon for Indiana propane, 24th of 38 states from the dearest and $0.130 below the national average, and $6.053 for heating oil. Last winter Indiana propane averaged $2.522 from November to March. A normal Indiana winter counts 4,658 heating degree days over those months, so the EIA's average Midwest propane home would burn about 622 gallons, which is $1,592 at this week's average. The figures exclude sales tax and delivery fees; your dealer sets the price you actually pay.
How the Indiana propane price is built
The EIA publishes a wholesale propane price for Indiana, $1.230. The residential average is $1.329 above it, so 52 % of the price at the house is delivery, storage, the tank and the dealer, and 48 % is the fuel itself. That split explains why a sharp move in wholesale propane shows up only partly, and late, in a household's bill.
Last winter the Indiana average ran from $2.181 to $2.786, its high on February 16, 2026. The record week is $4.265, on February 3, 2014. Since 2013-14, the November to March average ended above the mid-October price in 13 of 13 winters.

What a delivery costs
At this week's Indiana average, a 500-gallon tank filled from 30 % to 80 % takes 250 gallons and costs $640; a 1,000-gallon tank from 20 % takes 600 gallons, $1,535. The propane tank calculator reads any gauge and adds a fee or tax if you know it. Indiana propane is $0.088 cheaper than Ohio's this week and $0.616 dearer than Illinois's.
