Mississippi has the 2nd highest share of propane-heated homes among the 13 southern states of the federal survey, after Delaware: the Census Bureau's 2024 count is 115,164, 9.8 % of occupied homes, against 5.0 % in Alabama and 2.7 % in Texas. In the EIA's weekly survey of October 19, 2026, Mississippi propane averaged $3.137 a gallon, 18th of 38 states counting from the dearest and $0.448 above the national average. Last winter the state averaged $3.029 from November to March; the cheapest winter on file was 2015-16, at $2.035. A normal Mississippi winter counts 2,245 heating degree days over those months, so the EIA's average propane home in the South would burn about 406 gallons for heat, $1,272 at this week's price. The EIA does not survey heating oil in Mississippi. Prices exclude taxes and delivery fees.

Fuel versus delivery in the Mississippi price

For Mississippi the EIA does print a wholesale propane number, $1.075. Retail runs $2.062 higher, so out of every dollar a household spends on propane about 34 % cents buy the molecule and the remaining 66 % cover the truck, the bulk plant, the tank and the retailer. A swing in wholesale prices reaches the household only diluted by that layer.

Heat is the smaller part of the year

December normally brings 560 degree days to Mississippi and January 627, by NOAA's population weighting, roughly 57 % of what Missouri sees in January. Over twelve months a propane household here may use a good part of its gallons for hot water and cooking, which the heating estimate ignores; enter actual purchases in the budget tool. Heat delivered by a 90 % furnace costs $38 per million Btu at today's Mississippi price, a figure the fuel comparison puts beside electric heat, the state's leading choice. LIHEAP's federal income cap for a household of three is $45,372 here (method on the LIHEAP page).
