Missouri splits its heating between utility gas and electricity, but 217,087 homes, 8.5 % of the total by the Census Bureau's 2024 count, rely on propane. Wood heats another 58,965. In the EIA's weekly survey of October 19, 2026, Missouri propane averaged $2.181 a gallon, 29th of 38 states counting from the dearest and $0.508 below the national average. Last winter the Missouri average was $2.125 from November to March. A normal Missouri winter counts 4,275 heating degree days over those months, so the EIA's average Midwest propane home would burn about 571 gallons, which is $1,245 at this week's price. Heating oil is not surveyed in Missouri. Prices exclude sales tax and delivery fees, and each dealer sets its own price around the state average.

What the Missouri price is made of

The EIA's wholesale propane price for Missouri this week is $1.212. The residential average is $0.969 above it, so roughly 44 % of each gallon pays for delivery, storage, the tank and the dealer. That share explains why the price at the house moves more slowly than the wholesale market, in both directions.

Missouri and its neighbors

This week Missouri propane is $0.107 dearer than Kansas's average, $0.238 dearer than Illinois's, $0.415 cheaper than Arkansas's and $1.038 cheaper than Tennessee's. The propane table ranks all surveyed states every week.

Propane, wood and the winter budget

NOAA's normals give Missouri 1,018 heating degree days in December, 1,105 in January and 874 in February. A home that burns some wood alongside propane uses fewer gallons than the EIA average; for such a home, last winter's delivery tickets are the better guide, and the winter budget accepts them. Per million Btu at the ENERGY STAR furnace rating, Missouri propane heat costs $26 this week; the comparison page sets it against an electric heat pump at the EIA's regional forecast rate.

The federal LIHEAP ceiling for a Missouri household of two is $46,159 a year and for four $67,882. States may set their own limit below the federal ceiling; the LIHEAP page explains how it is computed.
